Catalog Printing Tips That Generate Responses

Catalog printing can add another dimension to your business. Or, catalogs can comprise your entire business. If you have a store that you want to add mail order services to or if you are just starting a catalog business, follow these tips to create catalogs that will have your mailbox full of responses:

Create a new catalog each season. Even if your products don’t change every season like the clothing industry, this is when other companies are sending out catalogs so you should too. Get in when your competitors and other businesses are (or if you can, a few weeks earlier would be even better!). Change the graphics and font to reflect the season – heavier fonts and holiday graphics in the winter time and lighter fonts and summery graphics in the summertime.

Create a new catalog when you change or add major products. You want your customers to have the latest and greatest you have to offer, don’t you?

Try to print many of your marketing materials at once for a discount. Generally, the more you print, the more you save. You should already know if your catalog printing company can print other types of materials like flyers and brochures (if you don’t, now’s a good time to ask!). If the company you’re working with doesn’t print other materials, you should consider using a company that does so that you can negotiate a discount. By printing many of your pieces at one time, you’ll save the company time, ink costs, paper costs, etc. The company should then pass on some of their savings to you.

Design around your products. Your catalog design should be professional and impressive, but don’t let the design upstage the products! Use colors and design elements that enhance the product photos and make the photos the stars of the catalog. The design shouldn’t look better than the product!

Decide how you want to organize your products in the layout. You can either group them by cost, with the least expensive items up front and the most expensive in the back; or you can group them by functionality, with all similar functioning items next to each other. Whatever way you choose, make sure to stick with that organization from one catalog edition to the next. You don’t want to confuse customers by switching the order your products are presented. Also, a good rule of thumb is to place your most popular items in the middle of the catalog so that readers have to browse the rest of your products before getting to what they’re looking for.

Proofread! Before you mail out your catalogs be sure to read it over carefully for any grammar or spelling mistakes. If readers see any grammatical or spelling errors, they’re opinion of you and your products will go down.
