Drupal 6 Book – Review
I learned about Drupal and forth (as free time allows) since last summer. Reading this latest effort, Indeed, notions have benefited from reading the text Drupal 4.7. 4.7 The title definitely up and works as a beginner to Drupal, if this formula and style that is familiar. There are some physical changes: the role of this latest offering (my copy at least) has a better contrast. Can not find the details of the exact font, but the print size is larger so there are fewer words per line, of course, helps to improve readability. Therefore, the book of 267 pages translated into 362 pages 4.7, measured at the last page of the index.
As a beginner Drupal I fought for:
* Client-server configuration and all the creation of a community-oriented database.
* Drupal as an iceberg:
or what you can see – themes, modules, users, Forums
or you can not see the MySQL, PHP, CSS, server, templates and other files …
o Yes, and things in the water line – blocks, menus, "network nodes
* The Drupal files and folder structure
o The location of the basic elements contributed vs Drupal (and contents)
* The safety, access and permits
user or management
* Update and Configuration
or Drupal is largely a work in progress
* Customization – Themes, styles, be "original" – to extend Drupal.
The first fifty pages are an introduction to Drupal, how all began with its creator Dries Buytaert. In addition to installing the server software, and Drupal. Several Drupal Web site photos highlight this as a critical resource with forums and a great sense of community. Mercer wonder you can not push the envelope if it needs help sometimes time.
In Page 32 "The environment of a line tells readers Drupal … you prefer, you can dive right in and make changes to Drupal site. "This seems a bit premature for me, but six pages later, we are interested in obtaining and installing Drupal. As this is my first review Book of the Convention adopted is stolen or two sentence summary of Packt book, with my thoughts:
Chapter 1 is an introduction to the world of Drupal and looks at where Drupal comes, where will, and what you can offer. – The Drupal community is an invaluable resource and addition to literacy and the fight I attended a user group were everybody has something to offer and there are a lot of enthusiasm and skills on tap. This highlights the web and forums Mercer as a source of support and, possibly, could have done more (even without the details) the number of groups Local Users and Drupal events. However, this comprehensive introduction led to a discussion on the state of Drupal as a project code open license. This explains most of the dynamics of power Drupal. It provides guidance in building a website – including your friends "- and remember no paper and pencil to plan and develop ideas.
Chapter 2 discusses how to get everything you need and works in a development team and briefly discusses how all the technologies needed to produce a working Drupal gel. … – Opt for a package combined I tried XAMPP and WAMP5 ApacheTriad before deciding Apache, MySQL and PHP5 software. The thing is, do not give up. I installed Drupal-scratched a couple of times, my excuse – I would give some time … and then leave it alone. … Like many things in life, you need to spend time and invest build their knowledge and skills (Even a casual 10-15 minute session can help.) This is a very informative approach to adopt any what server. As the review points – keep the administrator password security! Mercer task here is to help to consider installation process Drupal 6. Although there is no "automatic" has been greatly improved.
Chapter 3 is to add functionality the site of the new creation. … – David Mercer At this stage, I wonder: I heard that many people are trying Drupal CMS and others and give up. If CMS have been questionnaires on what they reveal? A DHTML menu module is used as an example of a module and the need to find this new is in the overall index. Blocks and menus take some getting used to, and for me anyway. This is not necessarily very complex – are not addressed in the 1st 2nd, 3rd, even an acquaintance. If you forget to activate a block, a menu is not displayed. There are graphics manages drag and drop in menus, which helped me to finally grasp things. Mercer advice to see through the modules that are available for your version is worth the candle. Yes the number modules can be overwhelming, but the diversity and scope provide a reason to forge and there are more to follow.
Chapter 4 discusses more general situations that all Drupal administrators need to fight against. … – This chapter could be titled "chicken and egg" because is necessary to understand features of Drupal to commit to building your site. There are many options for configuring the site and again it is good advice take time and check the settings available, the image shown here with descriptions. Try immediately to assess the role clean urls (and p.325 path aliasing) using two browser windows can also help.
Chapter 5 addresses the issue of access control. … – In this chapter, may be re-reading. It made me realize that my new website is a vital forum. Even if I have some static content in a file, it would be a loss of power Drupal. Here, the roles are covered, with emphasis on planning and the creation of political access p.116. All throughout the book is a reminder that giving users the permissions they need to accomplish the task x, yozy nothing else. Mercer notes that the functions they have and what your site can "deliver" also depends on general administration. If you are a band director or any Help? It is always difficult to predict the future, hence the need for planning based access that you can build.
Chapter 6 goes to the heart of the matter by the book cover in the content. … – This chapter highlights the blog entries, book pages, the subjects of forum and pages with these types of content only the beginning. Learning is not just the "what" but "how" to manage content and the distinction (or not) between the nodes. When you work on your site and how to remember the format input "of this chapter – again really useful. I wondered why my drop capital and the effects table is not displayed. Only a few labels HTML is not allowed through the filter.
Throughout the book the approach workflow helps instill confidence in the hand at the conclusion of step by step, but also experience encouraging one. Another idea for me here is the wider potential of RSS aggregator Drupal. You also realize how fast the money is the publication these days, with photos of RSS aggregator are dated 02/05/2008. p.166. I have in mind a collaborative book on the model of Hodges, if the five pages devoted to nature the content of the book was essential reading. There are graphics manages the drag on the books, in addition to the menus as shown above.
Chapter 7 gives you the advantage when it comes to participation and creating dynamic content. Although this chapter is not need to be an expert in HTML, PHP, CSS, and it does show you the basics and shows how, with a little knowledge, extremely powerful and professional Content can be created. … – There are some pearls Drupal here: taxonomy, Content Construction Kit (CCK) and HTML, PHP and content of ads. There is even a brief Introduction to HTML. Time to consider also reading the description of the terms, vocabularies, thesauri and articles related to Drupal. With a little knowledge Clinical Terminology and after reading this and other sources of Drupal, I wonder if I have less than the estimate of the power of Drupal?
The section has me a bit perplexed CCK. My next task is to install CCK in Drupal 6.2, Mercer suggested to see if it works. At the time of writing this comment, when states are Drupal site creating a version of preliminary development [of] CCC D6 soon. As Mercer acknowledges CCK depends on another module called Views, which is not yet ready to Version 6. In a way something like this waiting for a book first blocks. Mercer also set up well, however, CCK, which tormented me by the possibilities, especially when combined with a sight when I been demonstrated in the Drupal User Group UK North West.
Chapter 8 gives a tour attractiveness, functional interfaces are created in Drupal through the use of themes. … – Time to get your hands dirty: first, although, as with the modules I followed the advice Mercer and controlled by the subjects available. You could be forgiven for thinking it a waste of time leaning on all subjects (Although many are not available for D6 to date). Also let the physical work for you and (like me) who naturally gravitate to a couple of subjects. If the bones are essential for structure, support chapters and locomotion, then 8 and 9 provide the meat of the book and Drupal.
Chapter 9 provides the icing on the cake by looking a series of more advanced topics. Dynamic and responsive content using JavaScript and jQuery support to supporting open native and implementation actions and triggers, you learn to improve your site and add that something special. … – I blame Mercer 4.7 (plus some exciting demos) to motivate me to invest in a specific book jQuery. (The user group pointed me to another seminal book Drupal – 'Pro' title.) Accounts jQuery for a brief but highly effective five pages, I hope, in my efforts to incorporate the test site soon. Drupal 6 has seen a greater focus on internationalization and localization. This feature is very positive for me, Mercer serves more than 15 pages. My new site should be global, Drupal can offer, and shows the way Mercer. The translation files are still in the future for this student of Drupal, but for languages cacheing, strangulation, and I know that the performance was to ask for help. OpenID could be a real first for user adoption and is covered in just over four pages and calls for further research. The book is peppered with all URLs and tips for more resources and reading.
Chapter 10 has a pragmatic view on the type of tasks that must be competent to successfully implement and maintain a Drupal site. … – Have a backup the database and manually run cron job, there is something important I have not yet done and the task is significant the update. The Annex is solely responsible for the implementation.
I have much more to prove in terms of learning and Drupal demonstration of competence (a website would be implemented!). I am convinced however that Mr Mercer is helping me to continue with this book very last Drupal instructive. It is significant that there is a good team behind this title. I fully endorse this summary on the Packt site:
Written in the same style as the original Drupal title, this book is a pragmatic view on the steps needed to get a website and running. Based on years of experience writer, David Mercer uses a friendly style, using both clear and concise – perfect for Drupal beginners.

About the Author
David Mercer was born in August 1976 in Harare, Zimbabwe. Having always had a strong interest in science, David came into regular contact with computers at university where he graduated cum laude with majors in applied math and math (although he minored in computer science).
As a programmer and professional writer who has been writing both code and books for about nine years, he has worked on a number of well known titles, in various capacities, on a wide variety of topics. His books have sold tens of thousands of copies and have been translated into over 6 different languages to date.
David finds that the challenges arising from the dichotomous relationship between the science (and art) of software programming and the art (and science) of writing is what keeps his interest in producing books piqued. He will no doubt continue to write professionally in the future.
David balances his time between programming, reviewing, writing, and contributing to interesting web-based projects such as RankTracer and LinkDoozer. When he isn’t working (which isn’t that often) he enjoys playing guitar (generally on stage and unrehearsed) and getting involved in outdoor activities ranging from touch rugby and golf to water skiing and snowboarding. Visit RankTracer or find him on LinkDoozer where he is generally lurking.
