Multilingual people: Do you have to mentally translate 2nd languages into your native language to understand?
Or do you just read the other language and understand it without having to translate the words into your first language?
If you live in a place where the language spoken is different than your native language, which one do you think in?
When you begin learning a language, you have to mentally translate.
However, at some point you start saying phrases like greetings naturally, then you read your first text without the help of a dictionary, and so on.
Later, you do not need to translate any longer and you can expect to become fluent in the language. You can do it only if you do not translate.
As for your last question, I did think in the language spoken in that place though it was not my native language, because I already mastered it. Only in some special cases I had to switch, like when reading very complicated sentences (not good writing style) or trying to explain a foreign custom or way of thinking to someone.
