How to turn a book into a full-time life
Self-publishing: easier, easier and more lucrative than ever
"The only reason to self-publish because you can not land a publisher. "
Call me crazy, but I disagree. For me, self-publishing has been the first choice. Why? I wanted to keep control of the project and timetable, keep right, and, most importantly, keep most profits. What was the outcome? Well …
Full Time Income
For over four years, my first book supported me full time. No pick-out-chateaux-in-the South-type-of-France "of money, but paid all my bills (including two editions per year), I allowed to take nice vacations, save some money and do not include new debt. If your profit per pound (after expenses) is often what you made with a publisher, can be very profitable with a much smaller number.
Some caveats. My genre – non-fiction "how" – Is probably the easiest to self-published (with non-fiction straight second). Why? Not only is there an insatiable appetite for information in public consumption, but as non-fiction "how" it is relatively easy to identify and pursue a specific audience. The fiction is more difficult to self-publish, but for the first time novelists, is also much more difficult to attract a traditional publisher.
Disclaimers second and third
All this advice is valid if the aim is that his book will be a commercial success and if you have the time to market of his masterpiece. Otherwise, you'd be better off with an editorial or in a POD scenario, where your initial investment is low or nonexistent (as it will in all likelihood, your profits backend …). On the question of time, however, if you fantasize that you find an editor that allows you to simply let his manuscript, while managing everything foobar "marketing repugnant", think again.
Author Jessica Hatchigan (How to become your own publicist) has observed: "The authors receive modest advances for his books – and that most authors – can expect scandalously little marketing support from most publishers. "Most publishers these days want to work with authors who come to them with not only his book but also a promotion plan and Marketing book. So, if I always do the most work of anemic royalty rates, self-publishing is worth a visit.
Conventional vs. Unconventional
Most publishers take the shotgun "approach to promotion and advertising. Mass e-mail news Press the mainstream media. Review and send bulk unsolicited copies (with little supervision or not). Each of the nearly 500 exam papers I sent over the years there was someone with whom I communicated in advance. Yes, it takes longer, but yields much more " the explosion to book. "
Since a self-publisher, you can focus on his title and find the most effective ways to promote that Contrary to earlier chain model described by bars. Instead, as a self-publisher, I go where the traffic is lighter, the reception is warmer and people speak my language.
The goal: to be seen "everywhere!"
About a year earlier, after asked a customer where he met the book, she replied: "Everywhere! Music to the ears of an author. Another woman wrote: "I first heard of his book on writersdigest.com then writerswrite.com, and finally writersweekly.com. After the third time, I thought I had to see what was all this clutter. "It seems that people need to receive multiple impressions before they act. Very useful information. How can I do? The Internet, of course – the great equalizer for small.
Take my book as an example: the well-fed Writer: financial self-sufficiency as a freelance writer in six months or less – a step by step "how to" to establish a lucrative time full or part-time freelance writing business enterprise. With the reduction of the entire last decade, corporate America is outsourcing many projects to write to the hourly rates of $ 50-125 +.
Okay, Who is my audience? All budding writers looking to make a good life with his pen, self-experienced trying to diversify into higher-paying jobs as housewives and mothers based business seekers looking for a flexible, well-paid home race.
Go to your market
Comments to the earth (and interviews, presentation, says the green light to write articles, etc.), go to where your audiences targets hang out. Internet searches for websites, associations, newsletters and discussion groups dealing with these groups. Visit sites and make your way via e-mail. Establish a standard pitch letter, vary slightly for different audiences, and "paste Cut 'n'. And I repeat, hundreds of times.
Mainstream Media?
Indeed, the pursuit of mainstream media (MM) of coverage, as well as online networking, but he knows that the media is exponentially more fickle than if you can focus on your target audience through the process described above – if you get a much better response.
The reality: the possibility that the author is unknown, will attract the attention of a very important newspaper market is limited. It is not impossible, but not worth the return, when efficiency of an expectation. If you are going to keep GM, forget the book publishers, and discovering that "channel" Editor – Restoration Work, Education, Business, Features, Computers, Lifestyle – would be an excellent addition to your subject. Contact them and incidentally, not the book, but an angle represented by the book. They are concerned not simply that you wrote a book, they want to know why the book is relevant today.
Your Web Site
A website is mandatory. Period. It is the backbone of any Internet marketing push. Mine (www.wellfedwriter.com) has a sample chapter, table of contents view, cover art, Q & A radio / television documentaries and much more. Check out the "Attn: Media" which appears on my site, which makes their job much easier (and therefore more likely to occur). Always add your URL to your electronic signature in every email you send.
Landing a publisher has never been more difficult, but thanks to the Internet, which is no longer your only option. Self-publishing is easier, more accessible and more profitable than ever. Is not it time for a raise?
