Book Review: The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston

Barbara Locci and Antonio Lo Bianco, her lover were the first victims of the monster of Florence terrible terror that used to stalk lovers of the Italian countryside only to leave them maimed in the blood. After them, twelve people died, fourteen young lovers, in total, over a period from 1968 to 1985.

When author Douglas Preston decided to move to Florence in search his book with the help of Italian journalist Mario Spezi, which was when the legendary saga of the strike in its wake bloodshed. One of his crimes bleeding took place along the new home of Preston. So, for the author, the Monster of Florence has been more that Europe's response to Jack the Ripper. It was rather a requirement to become an obsession with history wrapped in a horrible crime.

From 1968 to 1985, fourteen young lovers were horribly murdered in their car in remote areas outside of Florence. The chaos and madness were the only words to describe scenes rhyme and torture victims have suffered. All victims were shot first with a 22 automatic Beretta, then stabbed to death.

Preston and Spezi began to search for evidence, although witnesses had died and missing evidence. Preston followed many local theories and even joined a Monsterologist "in its efforts to complete all outstanding crimes. With Spezi developed many theories about the identity of the murderer: it could be an aristocrat Local, a Satanist, a betrayed husband, someone knives skillfully, like a doctor or a butcher. It could even be an imitator of Hannibal Lecter.

With all the main suspects in whole or in Released on appeal, Preston and Spezi has continued his research until a paranoid police force face more alarmed economy right to name the suspect, Spezi jailed on suspicion of being the monster and accused Preston for obstructing justice.

In 2001, Florence police arrested Francesco Bruno, a criminal psychologist and Aurelio Mattei, a psychologist SISDE secret service. While books, CDs and notes the killings were confiscated, and the two men were questioned persistently for more than nine hours, police could not take one them as guilty of heinous murders. However, investigators still believe that the two suspects of withholding critical evidence from the investigation original.

In the annals of crime, the Monster of Florence is one of the most strange. Capturing the imagination of astonishment Italians, their crime consumes enormous resources. In fact, nearly one hundred thousand men were studied and more than a dozen were arrested. Douglas Preston mentions in his introduction that "the investigation has been like a malignancy, spreading backward in time and go in space, the metastasis in different cities and swelling in the new research, with new judges, police and prosecutors, the suspects, arrests, and many more lives ruined.

The first half of the book is the story of the contribution Spezi brings Preston simplified in the case of the second half. "The Monster of Florence" is a fascinating dark falls into a landscape of horror and at the same time, a piece absorbing biography. As history unfolds, Preston and Spezi be part of the terrible stories they cover.

Overall, "The Monster of Florence" is more like the work of a journalist, rather than work of a novelist, which makes sense given the background of both Preston and Spezi. However, this in no way which makes the novel less fascinating. In fact, the writing style makes the book compelling and immediate that the murders are bizarre enough to attract the attention drive.

About the Author

I work as a financial and investment advisor but my passion is writing, music and photography. Writing mostly about finance, business and music, being an amateur photographer and a professional dj, I am inspired from life.

Being a strong advocate of simplicity in life, I love my family, my partner and all the people that have stood by me with or without knowing. And I hope that someday, human nature will cease to be greedy and demanding realizing that the more we have the more we want and the more we satisfy our needs the more needs we create. And this is so needless after all.
