Who have read “The Lost Symbol” by Dan Brown?

I really don’t get the bizarre ending. The Word is “The Bible”? I don’t get what Dan Brown is trying to tell us. Can someone explain that to me?

I think the lackluster ending is Brown’s attempt to reconcile with his more ‘Christian’-leaning audience that may have been alienated by the ideas put forth in ‘The Da Vinci Code.’

The lost symbol or the lost word is, according to Brown’s narrators in Katherine and her brother, the lost ability of mankind to manifest results through the power of prayer. It is the idea that thoughts, hopes, wishes, dreams, and ultimately, what many term prayer, has the capacity to affect the physical world around us.

It is very akin to the New Age ideas of ‘positive thinking’ and ‘power affirmation’; that if you can believe it, you can make it so, you can manifest it, or make it real. That is the delicate connection that Brown tries to weave between Noetics and the Masonic ‘ideas.’

He is trying to reconcile the ‘great thinking minds’ of history and their supposed belief (as Masons) that people have the power to manifest their own destinies simply by believing something to be true. It is a slight step in the direction of, “If you believe it, if you pray it, if you speak it, then it will be so.”

In Mal’akh, Brown seeks to create someone who misinterprets the ‘beliefs’ into the idea of a physical force of power; the power to create. Mal’akh mistakenly believes that through his own death, he can by sheer force of his own will and through the dark magical practices he vainly undertakes, that he can harness a powerful, all-knowing wisdom. He sees Katherine’s attempts at revealing this ‘power’ to the world as a threat by giving the knowledge to those who are ‘unworthy’ in his mind.

It is a very frustrating ending, but ultimately what Brown is trying to say through Katherine and her brother is that the lost symbol, the lost word is man’s ability to recognize his own divinity and that through that divinity, Man can create the world around him as he sees fit to benefit of all Mankind. Obviously, this is how Brown tries to veil his beliefs that the Masons are just a group of old men with funny rituals and secret handshakes that don’t really present any type of threat.
