What are the effects of matter-antimatter annihilation?
In a Feynman diagram, the top most basic, we see a lepton, antilepton, and a photon, which illustrates the annihilation of two massive particles, resulting in a photon pulse equal to the sum two fermions. My question is: does this mean that the result of a massive matter antimatter annihilation (such as Dan Brown's Angels and Demons) is an enormous flash of light with the matter involved missing or would there be a kind of side effects observed (noise, shock waves, etc.)?
The interaction of matter and antimatter produce a pair of photons of specific frequency gamma. If there is a lot of these photons released shortly about the same time as the gamma rays interact with the surrounding matter, they lose their energy through ionization and excitation Nuclear. This will lead to the flash of light and heat and the rapid expansion due to thermal agitation that we feel like an explosion. The actual event Annhilation produces only gamma - If there are no surrounding matter, so thats all that would happen and there would be no flash of light, no shock wave - The interaction of gamma with ordinary matter that produces the observed explosion.
