Where the authors obtained their information?

I read the biography of the fiction writer Dan Brown (The Da Vinci Code). He said that reading a novel, he decided he could do better and started work on his own novel. My question now is: Where does a writer get your infos. I know that you have to investigate the area you want to write. But what happens with authors who write things about the NSA agents and their work. How do know? I doubt that the NSA, the CIA would give information on how to do things. Do you have any idea how to get information about things like that? Thanks in Advace!
