Coraline is inappropriate for children?

I have lots of grade 4 children (go to grade 4) who want to read "Coraline" by Neil Gaiman and one of sixth graders said it was very inappropriate, but I intend to read any way. The review committee of the library, said is suitable for children aged 8 to 11 and children are 8 to 9 years. In addition, the film is inappropriate as well? I want to see the film in late summer when they have finished the book. Thank you!
