Leadership Principles â € "a review of Câ € ™ s Your Ship

At 36, Michael Abrashoff was selected to become commander of the USS Benfold â € "at the time, the youngest commander of the Pacific Fleet. The immediate challenges He faces were astonishing: The malaise, sales outstanding, an unacceptable level. Few believe that the ship could be improved. To In many ways, the Benfold was actually an extreme example of the same problems faced by organizations today.

As the new leader of his own command of Michael became more sedentary. â € CERN my induction ceremony, my predecessor, under the cheers. The crew was actually hitting him and his family left. I knew then that command and control leadership was dead.â €

people â € œâ many do you need to ensure the next class. All I wanted to do in the Navy was in command of a ship. I did not care if I have never been promoted again. And that attitude enabled me to do things for my people, instead of doing good things for my career. Along the way, was my people that created the results to ensure my next € promotion.â

The solution was to establish a system of beliefs called Michael the basis of leadership â € "a process replace command and control, commitment and cohesion of the involvement of the heart, mind, and employee loyalty.

In his book, Itâ € ™ s your ship: management techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy, said Michael, who â € OETH thing the largest of a captain can do is see the ship through the eyes of € crew.â

For Michael, this meant interviews each person on your boat, from the highest official of the new recruit – an experience that begins to generate more useful ideas, often in The most unexpected sources. For example, through a meeting, Michael was able to meet one of the most demoralizing roles of the crew: Relentless chipping and painting has always been a task for a Ship ™ € s youngest sailors, most individuals that Michael wanted to connect. One these sailors simply suggested replacing the material oxidation with nuts and bolts in stainless steel.

â € OEI took our map credit and buy steel hardware steel that day, â € said Michael. â € œThose guys didnâ € ™ t pick up the brush for the rest of the time I was in board.id € Today, this whole process, the Navy uses â € "a solution has begun efforts basis.

Leadership is a philosophy based allowing everyone to share responsibility for achieving excellence. Leadership is the basics:

â € ¢ â lead by example € "Community leaders know they must first change their own attitudes and behaviors before expecting the crew to change.

â € Â € ¢ Listen aggressive "Grassroots leaders are not simply listen, listen to what people tell you. They know that the frontlines are the most familiar with the operations may be more effective.

â € ¢ Communicate purpose and meaning â € "to help their leaders to understand the basis of Crew (collectively and individually) how their work contributes to the success of the overall mission and understand how that work supports the personal goals they have themselves.

â € ¢ Creating a climate of trust â € "Leaders of the basis of trust and cultivate the confidence of his crew. Without trust, the barriers that prevent excellent performance will never be reduced.

â € ¢ Search for Results greeted n â € "leading to the basis to optimize performance, the growth of its people. They can not succeed with their people succeed.

to take calculated risks € ¢ â € "Community leaders know that taking prudent risks calculated is essential to maximize performance.

â € ¢ Go Beyond Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) â € "leading to the basic look a standard operating procedure Indicative because SOP does not change as rapidly as the environment and competition. Therefore, promoting a climate that encourages people to find more effective and innovative ways to carry out its mission.

â € ¢ Others strengthen or build their approach â € "leading to the basic culture of their people and create an environment where everyone can win, then the whole team stronger.

â € ¢ â € Generating Unit "community leaders working not only to change undesirable behavior, but to change basic attitudes. By working with a mutual respect for all, that the level playing field, allowing everyone to perform at the highest level.

â € ¢ Cultivate the quality of life â € "leading to the base actively integrate fun work experience. They want their team to have as much fun to 9 to 5 as they make their home in 5 to 9, thus gaining the passion, enthusiasm and creativity that usually stop their car in the parking lot every morning.

For each measure, these principles are capable of achieving significant results. Turnover staff has decreased by 1%, unprecedented. The rate of military promotions tripled, and operating expenses decreased 25%. USS Benfold was considered as the best ship in the Pacific Fleet, winning the prestigious Spokane Trophy for having the highest degree of combat readiness.

His first book, Ita € ™ s Your ship has sold more than hundreds of thousands of copies and is a New York Times and the Wall Street Journal bestseller. While receiving praise from businesses and mind as entities Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, and others, perhaps the greatest test of Michaela € ™ s leadership style is represented by a crew member, who published the next revision of Câ € ™ s Your Ship at Amazon.com:

I am a plankowner * Benfold and admired the master of leadership Abrashoff. His superior leadership brought the morale of our unusual boat to life aboard a ship that many fleet is a party. Our boat was a show that we are proud to organize and execute their orders.

What could have been a horrible desolation six months of deployment, there including holidays spent in the Gulf, 97-98, becomes an unforgettable experience for all, thank you to the captain Abrashoff unrep was a great event! We told him that although he had important work to do, we are rewarded with pride in our achievements. Commander was Captain Abrashoff very accessible, an experience that had never been in the army and has been rare while employed with the state government. He tried to see his team not only their jobs exceptionally well, but we enjoyed the party has offered to ships when in port.

I read fantastic book, reliving all the memories of my life Benfold and have used their leadership skills to become a professional success in the world "civil". For readers who feel Capt. Abrashoff is "arrogant" in his leadership style – I think if there was a ship as impressive that Benfold to be part of, you'd be so proud of him and the leaders who have done such a good place to spend a few years of his life.
